Holiday with a toddler in Bavaria: Baby Lounge, stroller-friendly excursions and stress-free all-inclusive.

Holiday with a toddler in Bavaria: it's more relaxed than you think

The first holiday with a toddler feels like a logistical masterpiece. Nappies, bottles, baby food, favourite cuddly toy, buggy, travel cot. The packing list is longer than the holiday itself. And then the questions: will the child sleep in a strange bed? Will they have what we need on site? Can we even do anything?

The good news: yes, you can. And really well, too. The Bavarian Forest is one of the best regions in Germany for the first holiday with a toddler. Flat paths, clean nature, short distances. And at Sonnenhotel Bayerischer Hof in Waldmünchen, we have set up many things so that families with babies and toddlers from 0 to 3 feel completely at ease.

The Baby Lounge: your retreat in the hotel

With a toddler, you need different things in a hotel than a couple without children. Not a cocktail at the bar, but a clean changing area. Not a fitness room, but a safe place to crawl. That's exactly what the Baby Lounge is for.

The Baby Lounge is a dedicated area especially for families with children aged 0 to 3. Here you'll find:

  • A spacious crawling area with soft flooring
  • Changing facilities with everything you need
  • Comfortable seating for breastfeeding or feeding
  • Toys for the very youngest

The best part: you're among yourselves. No one looks annoyed if your child whines. Other parents with babies are there, and a relaxed exchange develops quickly. Many families tell us that they perceived the Baby Lounge as the most relaxed place in the entire hotel.

Cot: pay once, done

You don't need to lug a travel cot. We provide a sturdy cot in your room. That costs a one-off 5 euros for your entire stay, regardless of whether you stay three nights or a week. So you save space in the car and still have a safe bed for your child.

All-inclusive with a baby: no stress with bottles and baby food

If you travel with a toddler, you know meals as a constant task. Warming bottles, mixing food, preparing snacks. On holiday with all-inclusive, much of that falls away.

At Sonnenhotel Bayerischer Hof, all-inclusive means: breakfast buffet, lunch, afternoon cake and ice cream, dinner buffet. Plus all drinks all day, from coffee and tea to cocoa, juices, soft drinks, beer and wine. No time slots, no extra charge.

For the smallest, you'll find at the buffet everything you need: soft bread, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, yogurt, pasta. You can get hot water for bottles at any time at the drinks station. That sounds like a small thing, but in everyday life with a baby it makes a huge difference if you don't have to constantly think about where and when the next meal is coming from.

Children aged 0 to 2: free of charge

With us, children up to and including the age of 2 stay free of charge in their parents' room. You only pay the one-off 5 euros for the cot. All meals and drinks are inclusive for the little ones just as they are for you.

Pool and paddling pool: warm enough for the smallest

Water is the greatest thing for toddlers. But many hotel pools are too cold, too deep or too unmanageable for babies and toddlers. Our indoor pool is pleasantly heated and therefore also suitable for the very youngest. You can play with your child in the warm water in peace, without it getting cold.

The indoor pool is included in the all-inclusive price. You can use it as often and as long as you want. Especially on rainy days or when nap time wrecks an excursion, the pool is a lifeline. Into the water, have fun, then back to the room and relax together.

Excursions with a stroller: three top destinations from Waldmünchen

A holiday with a toddler doesn't mean you sit in the hotel all day. The area around Waldmünchen offers a surprising number of excursion destinations that are doable with a stroller. Here are our three favourites.

Perlsee loop trail: nature on flat paths

Perlsee is just about one kilometre from the hotel. The loop around the lake is paved and therefore perfect for a stroller. The short version is about 4 kilometres long and completely flat. No climbing, no steps, no tripping hazards.

Along the shore there are several benches and shady spots where you can take a break. In summer, a stop at the swimming beach with its shallow shore zone is worthwhile. With toddler pace, the walk takes about an hour if you take your time and watch the ducks at the water's edge.

Bavarian Forest Treetop Walk: barrier-free all the way to the top

The Treetop Walk in Neuschönau is one of the best-known excursion destinations in the region. What many don't know: the trail is completely barrier-free. You can take your stroller all the way up to the viewing platform at 44 metres' height. No stairs, no narrow spots.

The path through the treetops is a real experience for toddlers. At eye level with the canopy, with views of birds and squirrels. And for you, there's one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the entire Bavarian Forest. Plan around 90 minutes for the drive there, and you'll have a perfect half-day excursion.

Animal park in the National Park: experiencing animals with a buggy

The animal park in the Bavarian Forest National Park near Ludwigsthal is like a large nature zoo. On a sweeping circular trail, you'll encounter wolves, lynxes, bears, wild horses and capercaillies. The paths are wide and well surfaced; you'll get through easily with a stroller.

Toddlers are fascinated by the animals, which live here in large, near-natural enclosures. The loop is about 7 kilometres long, but you can shorten it at any time. Take your time and follow your child's rhythm. When nap time calls, you simply turn around.

Practical tips: how the holiday with a toddler stays relaxed

After hundreds of families with babies and toddlers as our guests, we know the typical pitfalls. Here come our honest tips.

Keep the daily rhythm

The single most important tip: don't try to plan the holiday against your child's sleep rhythm. If your toddler usually has a midday nap at 12, don't plan an excursion over lunchtime. Use the morning for activities and the afternoon for the pool or Baby Lounge instead.

The all-inclusive concept helps enormously here. You don't have to stick to restaurant times and can eat flexibly when it fits your rhythm.

What you should bring from home

Even though much is available with us, there are a few things you'd better pack:

  • Favourite cuddly toy and dummy (obvious, but surprisingly often forgotten)
  • Swim nappies for the pool
  • Sunscreen with high SPF
  • Familiar baby monitor, in case your child sleeps in the room in the evening while you're still in the restaurant
  • Comfortable shoes for the walks

The best room type for families with a toddler

Choose a family room with enough space. If the baby sleeps in the parents' room, you need enough room to still move about in the evening without waking the child. Our family rooms offer the space you need, and the cot fits effortlessly next to the parents' bed.

Bavarian Forest with a toddler: more than you'd expect

Many parents underestimate the Bavarian Forest as a destination with a toddler. Yet the region is made for the first family holidays. Clean air, short distances, affordable prices. And nature that toddlers marvel at with wide eyes, even if they cannot yet name the mountains and forests.

If you want to learn more about the region, you'll find further excursion tips, hiking routes and insider knowledge for families in our Bavarian Forest Guide.
