Getting to the Bavarian Forest: How to Reach Waldmünchen
Getting to the Bavarian Forest: travel to Waldmünchen by car or train. Travel times, parking and stopover tips.
Waldmünchen is closer than you think
When you think of the Bavarian Forest, it might sound like a long drive. But Waldmünchen is easy to reach from many cities in southern Germany, and even from Prague. We'll show you the best routes to our Sonnenhotel Bayerischer Hof and give you practical tips for a stress-free arrival.
By car: the fastest connection
Most of our guests travel by car. There are good reasons for this: the roads to the Bavarian Forest are well developed, the landscape becomes more and more beautiful along the way, and once you arrive you'll have the flexibility for excursions in the area.
The main route via the A6 and B22
Coming from the west, take the A6 motorway towards Amberg. From Amberg, continue on the B85 towards Cham. From Cham, the B22 leads directly to Waldmünchen. The last few kilometres through the gentle hills of the Upper Palatinate Forest are already a foretaste of your holiday.
Coming from the south and east, take the A3 motorway to Regensburg and then continue on the B85 to Cham. From Cham, follow the B22 to Waldmünchen.
Travel times from major cities
Here is an overview to help you plan:
- Munich: approx. 2.5 hours (around 230 km via A9/A93 or A92/B85)
- Nuremberg: approx. 1.5 hours (around 150 km via A6/B85)
- Regensburg: approx. 1 hour (around 90 km via B85/B22)
- Prague: approx. 2 hours (around 180 km via D5/E50)
- Passau: approx. 1.5 hours (around 130 km via A3/B85)
- Pilsen (Plzen): approx. 1.5 hours (around 100 km)
The short distance to Regensburg in particular makes Waldmünchen perfect for a spontaneous weekend with the whole family.
Parking in Waldmünchen
Parking in Waldmünchen is easy. You'll find free parking right on the streets around the hotel. If you prefer covered parking, you can use our hotel garage for 4 euros per night. This is a good choice especially in winter, because in the morning you don't have to scrape ice and the kids can step straight from the warm car into the warm hotel.
By train: relaxed and eco-friendly
You can also reach Waldmünchen well without a car. The nearest railway station is in Cham (Upper Palatinate), about 30 kilometres away. Cham is well connected to the regional train network and is regularly served by trains from Regensburg and Nuremberg.
From Cham to Waldmünchen
From Cham you have two options:
- Regional bus: the bus line runs several times a day between Cham and Waldmünchen. The journey takes about 40 minutes.
- Taxi: if you'd like a faster and more comfortable trip, it's best to book a taxi in advance. The drive takes around 25 minutes.
Feel free to contact us before you arrive. We'll help with the arrangements and have up-to-date timetables ready for you.
From the Czech Republic: a short hop across the border
A particular advantage of Waldmünchen is its location right on the Czech border. Domažlice (Taus) is just a few kilometres away, and even Prague can be reached in just under two hours. For families from the Czech Republic, the Bayerischer Hof is an ideal destination, and the proximity to the border also offers exciting excursion options for guests from Germany.
The border crossings are easy to pass. All you need is a valid ID card or passport. You can buy a toll sticker (vignette) for the Czech motorways online or at petrol stations near the border.
Practical tips for your arrival
Stopover in Cham or Furth im Wald
If you're travelling with children, a short stop in Cham or Furth im Wald is worthwhile. Both small towns have a charming centre with cafés, bakeries and small shops. In Furth im Wald you can also see the famous Drachenstich dragon. It's a great first impression of the Bavarian Forest and breaks up a long drive.
In Cham you'll also find a well-stocked supermarket right on the through road. Perfect for picking up snacks or drinks for your room.
Plan your arrival time
Check-in starts at 3 pm. We recommend arriving by 8 pm at the latest so you can still enjoy a relaxed evening. If you arrive later, that's no problem. Just let us know briefly so we can have everything ready for you.
Food on late arrival
Our restaurant serves dinner until 8 pm. If you arrive later, we have a small snack area in the lobby. Alternatively, you'll find a few inns in Waldmünchen that also serve hot food in the evening.
