Waldmünchen attractions: Perlsee, open-air festival, old town and day trip tips for families.

Waldmünchen at a glance: family paradise in the Upper Palatinate Forest

Anyone travelling to the Bavarian Forest with their family will find in Waldmünchen a place that uniquely combines nature, history and adventure. The state-recognised climatic resort lies right on the Czech border and looks back on more than 1,000 years of eventful history. Yet Waldmünchen is no dusty museum town but a lively place with a programme that delights both children and adults alike.

From the Sonnenhotel Bayerischer Hof, you can reach the most important attractions on foot or by bike in just a few minutes. Here are our best tips for your stay.

The Perlsee: swim, play and relax

Only about a kilometre from the hotel lies the Perlsee, the heart of Waldmünchen's leisure offering. The lake is a true all-rounder for families: in summer it lures with clean bathing water, a shallow shore for small children and a generous lawn for sunbathing. A well-developed footpath runs around the lake and is also easy to follow with a pushchair.

For active families there are pedal-boat and rowing-boat rentals right at the shore. On warm days you can easily spend half a day here without anyone getting bored. Tip: pack a picnic and find a shady spot under the trees on the eastern shore.

Open-Air Festival "Trenck der Pandur": theatre under the open sky

Every summer in July and August, Waldmünchen turns into a historical stage. The open-air festival "Trenck der Pandur" tells the story of the notorious Pandour colonel Franz Freiherr von der Trenck, who roamed through the region with his troops in the 18th century. The open-air theatre is among the most traditional festivals in all of Bavaria.

Performances take place on the natural stage on the edge of town and attract thousands of visitors each year. For children from around six years old, the spectacle with riders, fight scenes and colourful costumes is an unforgettable experience. Plan your trip for July or August and you'll experience Waldmünchen at its most dramatic.

Tickets and dates

The exact performance dates are published every year in spring. Reserve your tickets in good time, because the most popular performances sell out quickly. Evening performances usually start at 8 p.m., when the sun slowly disappears behind the hills and bathes the natural stage in a special light.

St Stephen's Parish Church: clock exhibition and tower climb

St Stephen's Parish Church in the centre of Waldmünchen is far more than a place of worship. Inside it houses a fascinating clock exhibition that captivates children and adults alike. Historic clockworks, ornately decorated dials and mechanical wonders show how people measured time centuries ago.

The absolute highlight for families: every Thursday at 2 p.m. you can climb the church tower. From the top you have a fantastic panoramic view over Waldmünchen, the Upper Palatinate Forest and, in clear weather, all the way over to the Czech Republic. The tower climb is also doable for children from about eight years old. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

Adventure Playground "Räuberhöhle": romping and discovering

For younger guests, the "Räuberhöhle" (Robber's Cave) adventure playground is an absolute must. The generously laid-out playground sits embedded in the forest and offers everything a child's heart desires: climbing towers, slides, swings and, of course, the namesake robber's cave for hiding and exploring.

What sets this playground apart is its close-to-nature design. Instead of plastic and metal, wood and natural materials dominate. Children can not only play here, but also experience nature with all their senses. While the little ones romp around, you can enjoy the fresh forest air on the benches at the edge, because Waldmünchen does not bear the title "state-recognised climatic resort" without reason.

Climatic resort Waldmünchen: take a deep breath in the Bavarian Forest

The designation as a state-recognised climatic resort confirms what you can sense on every walk: the air in Waldmünchen is exceptionally clean and fresh. The location at the edge of the Upper Palatinate Forest creates a climate that is particularly beneficial for families with children.

Use the numerous hiking trails around the town for extended walks. The circular path around the Perlsee and the trails up to the Cerchov Lookout are particularly suitable for families with children of various ages. The paths are well marked, and rest benches at many points invite you to linger.

Border town with history: more than 1,000 years of Waldmünchen

Waldmünchen was first mentioned in records in the year 1006 and has lived through an eventful history ever since. As a border town to today's Czech Republic, the place was for centuries an important trading post and the scene of historical events.

Walking through the old town, you'll discover numerous traces of this long history: the historic town hall, well-preserved townhouses and the remnants of the medieval town fortifications. For children, history becomes tangible here, especially in combination with the open-air festival, which brings the past to life.

Day trip to the Czech Republic

The border to the Czech Republic is just a few kilometres away. A day trip to the neighbouring country is almost mandatory. The small Czech town of Klenov is quickly reached and offers an exciting contrast. Children usually find it exciting to "just pop over to another country".

Waldmünchen as a base for the Bavarian Forest

In addition to the attractions in town itself, Waldmünchen is an ideal starting point for excursions into the entire Bavarian Forest. The Bavarian Forest National Park, the Großer Arber and numerous theme parks all lie within day-trip distance.
