Family Weekend in the Bavarian Forest: a Worthwhile Break
Family weekend in the Bavarian Forest: 2- and 3-night programmes. Short trip, lots to experience, all-inclusive.
Why a weekend in the Bavarian Forest is just right
You don't have a whole week off but still want to escape your daily routine? Then a family weekend in the Bavarian Forest is exactly the right thing. Just two or three nights are enough for the whole family to really unwind. The Bavarian Forest is so close to many cities in southern Germany that you can set off on Friday afternoon and arrive in time for dinner.
From Munich it takes about two and a half hours, from Nuremberg about an hour and a half, and from Regensburg even just under an hour. That means: no endless sitting in the car, no whining children on the back seat, and no half of your holiday spent on the motorway.
The two-night programme: Friday to Sunday
If you book Friday and Saturday, you'll have a compact weekend with a surprisingly high recovery factor. Here's a concrete plan that you can of course adjust to your liking.
Friday: arriving and letting go
Check-in at the Sonnenhotel Bayerischer Hof starts at 3 pm. If you set off in the early afternoon, you'll arrive on time. First, settle calmly into your family room, let the kids explore the surroundings and then head to dinner. With all-inclusive at the hotel, you don't need to look for a restaurant or compare prices. You simply sit down and the holiday begins right away.
After dinner, a short evening stroll through Waldmünchen is worthwhile. The fresh air of the officially recognised health resort is particularly good after a working week. After that, everyone falls into bed contented.
Saturday: the big experience day
Saturday is your main day. After a generous breakfast you have several options:
Morning: experience nature. Start with a family-friendly hike in the area. The trails around Waldmünchen are well marked and manageable even with younger children. If you want something more adventurous, head to the Bavarian Forest National Park. The wildlife enclosure near Neuschönau is a highlight for children of all ages. Watch lynx, wolves and bears in near-natural enclosures, and walk along a treetop trail 25 metres above the ground. That stays in the memory.
Afternoon: pool and relaxation. Back at the hotel the pool area is waiting for you. While the kids splash about in the water, you as parents can finally put your feet up. That's one of the great advantages of a family hotel with all-inclusive: drinks and snacks are included, so no one has to keep running to a kiosk.
Evening: enjoy together. Over dinner at the hotel you can recap the day. No restaurant search, no waiting times, no debates about the menu. Just sit down and enjoy.
Sunday: Perlsee and a relaxed departure
On Sunday morning, the Perlsee is yours. The lake is just about a kilometre from the hotel and is perfect for one last holiday moment. In summer you can swim, ride a pedal boat or simply sit by the shore. In the cooler season, a walk around the lake is just as lovely. The path is flat and easy to walk even with a pram.
After lunch at the hotel (also included with all-inclusive), you'll head home in a relaxed way. The short travel times mean you'll be back home in the afternoon and Sunday evening is still free.
The three-night programme: get even more out of it
If you can, add an extra night. The third night turns a quick trip into a proper short break. You'll then have an additional full day, which makes everything more relaxed.
Friday and Saturday
As in the two-night plan: arrive, settle in, experience day with nature and pool.
Sunday: discover Waldmünchen
With the extra day you can dedicate Sunday entirely to Waldmünchen. In the morning, head to the Perlsee. In the afternoon, explore the old town with the parish church of St Stephan and the historical clock exhibition. Children find it exciting to see how people measured time centuries ago. In summer (July and August), a visit to the open-air festival "Trenck der Pandur" is worthwhile, one of the most traditional open-air theatres in Bavaria.
Alternatively, take a trip to the Czech Republic. The border is just a few kilometres away. Children find it exciting to "just pop into another country", and you'll experience an interesting contrast.
Monday: brunch and the way home
On Monday morning, you have another leisurely breakfast, perhaps a final round at the pool, and then head home strengthened. Thanks to the short travel times, you'll be back in good time.
Why all-inclusive really makes the short break perfect
On a long holiday, the search for restaurants and shopping options barely matters. On a weekend trip, it's a different story. Every hour you spend organising is missing from your relaxation time.
All-inclusive at the Sonnenhotel Bayerischer Hof means: breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake in the afternoon, dinner and drinks are included. You step out of the car and the holiday begins. No supermarket stop, no price comparisons on Google Maps, no argument with hungry kids in front of a fully booked inn.
Especially on short stays, this is a real advantage. You use every minute for what counts: time together.
The journey: shorter than you think
Many families underestimate how quickly the Bavarian Forest can be reached. Here are the travel times to Waldmünchen at a glance:
From Munich: around 2.5 hours via the A93 motorway. Set off Friday afternoon and check in around 5:30 pm.
From Nuremberg: about 1.5 hours via the A6 motorway and B22. Practically just around the corner.
From Regensburg: just under an hour. Even a spontaneous weekend getaway is possible without much planning.
From Passau: around 1.5 hours through one of Bavaria's most beautiful landscapes.
These short journeys make the Bavarian Forest the perfect destination for families who don't want to spend half of Friday on the motorway.
What children love about a weekend in the Bavarian Forest
Children don't need elaborate programmes to find a short break great. In the Bavarian Forest, the combination of nature, water and freedom of movement is enough.
The Perlsee is an adventure playground on the water. The hiking trails around Waldmünchen offer plenty to discover without overstraining little legs. The hotel pool brings excitement, no matter what the weather. And the food at the hotel is tasty without you having to find out which restaurant is child-friendly.
